5 Tricks To Growing Out A Pixie Cut

Celebs like Michelle Williams and Emma Watson have made the pixie covetable. And although it’s a risky cut, it’s just that — a haircut, and hair does grow back. These leading ladies are proving that the transition from short to long hair can be worry-free, and even a great style all in itself.

1. Snip Often
It may sound counterintuitive, but the key to making the transition period work is constant trims. With so many short layers, you need to trim consistently to bring strands closer to the same length. After almost a year of growing out her pixie, Emma Watson finally has a collarbone-skimming style with soft side bangs for added movement.

2. Go Asymmetrical
Michelle Williams has created a new cut for us to envy — the wispy banged pixie. The asymmetrical cut is quirky and flattering. With hair longer in front, this cut will transition seamlessly into a bob.

3. Keep Bangs In Check
Since Anne Hathaway first debuted her pixie, she’s also added bangs to the mix. However, unlike Michelle’s, her bangs are only slightly longer than the rest of her hair, and they end above her eyes.

4. Try Texture
Evan Rachel Wood has let her hair grow into a soft, above-the-chin crop. This look works so well because of the texture. Evan’s piece-y waves hide any imperfections, like strands growing in longer than others.

5. Go Choppy
Once her pixie grew a few inches, Ginnifer Goodwin added choppy layers to better frame her face.

Top 10 Best US Cities for Plastic Surgery

Despite a faltering economy, the demand to be beautiful continues to surge. In 2010, Americans spent 10 billion dollars and had over 13.1 million cosmetic procedures, a 5% increase from 2009.
Since the number of cosmetic surgeries is on the rise, we reviewed the best cites to be “nipped & tucked.” There were predictable entries like Miami & San Francisco, but also surprising ones like Sacramento and Balitmore. Most shocking of all was the city that placed second: Atlanta, Georgia.

Determining Plastic Surgeons Per Capita

To rank the cities, we obtained the number of plastic surgeons in each city from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The ASPS represents about 90% of all Board Certified Plastic Surgeons. While it is possible for plastic surgeons to practice without board certification, it is highly recommended that patients only seek out Board Certified plastic surgeons.
Next we calculated the number of Board Certified plastic surgeons per every 100,000 people. Population statistics were pulled from US Census Bureau. We didn’t include anyone under the age of 18 (minors only account for 2% of cosmetic surgeries nationwide).
Although New York has the most plastic surgeons (249 total) in the US, it only placed 42 out of 50. Unexpected cities such as Nashville, & Lousiville may have risen to the top ten due to university programs and centers that focus on plastic surgery and/or an influx of younger more affluent people to smaller cities.

Lips Beauty Tip: How to Get Super Pouty Lips

Having a hard time trying to achieve sexy super pouty lips? Here are a few steps in order to achieve this look that pairs perfectly with a dark smokey eye or a simple clean fresh look!
What you will need: lip balm; lip primer/lip erase/ foundation/concealer; lip pencil; lipstick and lip gloss.
First of all you want a clean canvas much like how you use foundation to achieve an even and clean look on your face as a whole; you want to do the same with your lips. Since most people do their lips last, start with applying a clear lip balm on your lips before applying the rest of your makeup so that your lips will be nice and moist and soft and ready to go once you get to this last step in your routine. I like to use Blistex Deep Moisture Renewal Sunscreen/Lip Protectant. You can use whatever lip balm treatment you would like for this step. You can also use MAC’s Lip Conditioner in a jar or tube.
Once you are ready to begin you will want to wipe the excess lip balm off your lips so that you can apply a lip primer/lip erase such as one from MAC Cosmetics or Urban Decay. You can skip this step if you want or you can even use your regular foundation/powder. The point of this step is to even out the color and texture of your lips, and create an even base so that your lip color has something to stick to. Again if you don’t want to do this step you don’t have to. Some people find this step unnecessary or too drying on the lip.
Using the right lip pencil is crucial at this stage. Even if you are only applying lip gloss defining your lip can save you from the lip gloss or lipstick from bleeding outside of the lines and in the case of lip gloss it can save you from looking like you are drooling. Not a good look on anyone! If you are going for a super clean look you will want to choose a pencil that is a nude or light pink and for a darker look you may want to venture into a purple or even a black pencil (you can use a black eyeliner pencil if you are going for a black or dark wine color).
Start by lining your top lip first. Use light feathering strokes to outline your lip. Begin with your cupids bow. You don’t need to go outside your natural lip line for this look. Instead of over-emphasizing the cupids bow try to make the lines more of a straight line or slightly curved line rather than a strict ‘V’ shape. This is more flattering on most people. Also at the corners you might want to slightly draw the line inwards to draw more attention to your bottom lip.
Next outline your bottom lip. This is where you can over-emphasize your natural lip line, but be careful to only do this in the center of the lip. Don’t forget to line the corners and then fill your lips in entirely. *note this is very important to do if you have not used some sort of primer or base
Once you have finished lining your lips you can move onto the lipstick. You can use the tube or a brush for this step. All depends on your comfort level. Using a lip brush is sometimes easier to use when you are manipulating your lip line (e.g. exaggerating your natural lip line or making the lip line look smaller; which we are doing both for this look); but if you are comfortable just using the lipstick itself that is fine as well. You will want to use a darker lipstick than lipgloss, or use a clear lipgloss if you are going for a nude lip, or even a slightly lighter nude or pink gloss. You will want to avoid glittery glosses. Also using a matte finished lipstick works best for this look. MAC has the Mattene lipsticks that work great for this and Rimmel has some excellent glosses including a black gloss that will work if you are using a matte black or purple lipstick.
Once you have the lipstick applied its time for the gloss. You don’t want to put this all over the lips, just in the center of the lip on both the top and bottom. Just purse your lips together a few times and do the finger trick in order to keep lipstick off your teeth.
If you happen to have lip piercings everything is the same except for the lining of the lips as you may have to line around the actual piercing. Try to keep the center of the lip line thicker than the sides and make sure to wipe the jewelry off so that there isn’t product all over the rings so the look doesn’t turn into a gooey mess!
Last step is to use concealer with a small brush to clean up your lip line ever so lightly which also helps to keep your lips looking fresh and crisp. Do this lastly to define the line more. You can still skip this step if you wish but it really can make a huge difference. Voila you are done and your pouty lips will surely get noticed!
Relatively simple but can add a polished sexy dramatic look to anyone’s lips and overall style!

10 tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle

1. Get in the Game

For this article, I asked Shelby.tv founder and former professional lacrosse player Reece Pacheco for his tips to stay fit. One of the most important points of perspective he provided me with was that working out, just like running a startup, requires mental determination, agility, flexibility and endurance. So get in the game.
“I’ve always been an athlete,” says Pacheco, “But I’ve found it’s tremendously important and beneficial to stay fit despite startup life. Staying healthy helps keep you going through long days, longer nights and what is a stressful roller-coaster ride of a career. Whether it’s lifting weights or endurance training, I always feel better after a good workout. Furthermore, I love the mental game of it. Exercise is often thought of as purely physical, but the longer I’ve been in the game, the more I realize it’s all mental. That mental challenge of climbing a ‘startup mountain’ is present everyday as a founder and putting yourself through long runs, heavy lifting sessions or crossfit workouts – whatever it is – is a great way to keep challenging yourself and be ready for whatever your startup throws at you.”

2. Work out first thing in the morning

If you can get into the habit of working out first thing in the morning, you’ll feel free, uninterrupted and energized throughout the entire day. A no-excuse, early AM approach is one of the only ways to get it done consistently. Yes, it may be rough for the first 5 minutes, but you’ll thank yourself later on. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Of A Kind‘s founder Claire Mazur says, “In the mornings, I get out of bed and immediately go for a run because I require every endorphin I can get my hands on just to function normally.” For the record, I consider a good romp in the sack to be a legit morning workout routine too.

3. Add Variety

shutterstock 74874436 520x346 Entrepreneurs: 10 tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle
Running is addictive. The gym is a scene. But you know what else is really awesome? Biking! Swimming! Tennis! Football! Hockey! And yoga posing (my personal favorite)! Some say variety is the spice of life, (I prefer mint and basil)… But variety in your workouts is a great way to maintain balance and wake up muscles you didn’t even know you had.
Toli-Kuznets, the creator of Marketcetera turns to rock climbing. He says, “For me, rock climbing turned out to be the perfect exercise. It’s very engineer-friendly: you climb ‘problems’, you use the same analytical and forecasting skills to map out your route. It’s a great outlet for whatever problems ‘drive you up the wall’ at work, and by the time you are done, you are dead tired and can fall asleep without any worries. Your ‘typing fingers’ get stronger, along with all your other muscles.”

4. Turn your commute into a work out

If you have a shower at the office, you have no excuse not to take advantage of your morning commute. Walk to work. Bike to work. No shower in your office? Then, run home from work. Feeling tired? Take the bus halfway and walk the rest.

5. Sneak workouts in whenever and wherever you can

“Something is better than nothing,” says Shelby.tv’s Pacheco, “So even if ping-pong is the only exercise you get that day, so be it. Use a standing desk, take the stairs when you can, walk everywhere, do pushups in the AM… it all adds up to a healthier you.” You manically add meetings to your calendar, so why not also block out time for your health while you’re at it?
Use a calendar app like Tungle.me, which shows your predetermined workout times as Not Available. Speaking of scheduling, why not schedule a workout as a meeting? Here’s to betting you’re not the only one who’s feeling slightly sluggish after long days sitting at a desk. Go for a long walk with a client. Hit the gym with your co-founder. Or why not challenge a competing startup to a Dodgeball duel? Just call Betabeat if you do.

6. Vitamins

Entrepreneurs say they take a slew of vitamins to feel top rate including a multi, B12, C, D, and fish-oil pills. It may seem like a lot, but Pacheco swears the B vitamins helped keep him going during the long days ofTechStars.
Not sure which vitamins to take? In David McCandless’ TED talk “The Beauty of Data Visualization” he references “Snake Oil?“, which is his beautiful data visualization creation of popular health supplements. Check it out for yourself to see if those goji berries are really worth $9.99 a bag.
Screen shot 2011 09 07 at 12.26.25 AM 520x221 Entrepreneurs: 10 tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle

7. Make healthy eating choices

“We all know that exercise is essential, but a healthy diet is just as important. In the 12 months after we founded ZocDoc, I slimmed down a lot – because the service made it easy to schedule visits with Maye Musk, my dietitian. She taught me to keep a food diary, which I’d review with her every few weeks. I dropped 25 pounds that year, just by eating more conscientiously!”
– Cyrus Massoumi, co-founder & CEO of ZocDoc
The food you cook at home is far healthier than anything you can get at a restaurant. Eating healthy is one-third of living a healthy lifestyle, along with exercise and sleep. Avoid all sodas. They are crap for you. Limit your caffeine intake, choose tea over coffee, salads over burgers and keep healthy snacking options around the office like fresh fruit, granola and nuts.
The more junk you put in your body, the worse you will feel. Sure, junk food is cheap and quick, but do you take the cheap and quick route when it comes to your business? No. So, why would you do it for your health?
8. Refresh
We’re all human after all. There are going to be 4am nights when you’ve downed one margarita an hour. There are going to be days when you nom a Shake Shack burger with extra cheese and pickles. Thankfully, what goes in, must come out. Pamper yourself with a trip to the steam room or the sauna to sweat the toxins out. And if you’re feeling ambitious, there are a number of cleanses that will give your system the rest it needs. I recommend the Blueprint Cleanse, if for no other reason than the Cashew Milk drink at the end is delicious. And for a mini break, try just eating fruit for 24 hours.

9. Sleep: every so often, don’t set an alarm.

You’re an entrepreneur. You’re in this game because you’re passionate, but I’m also willing to bet you’re in this game because you don’t like working for anyone else. So every once in a while, wake up without an alarm, in other words, sleep until your body asks you to wake up.

10. Surround yourself with good people

Kinvey‘s founder Sravish Sridhar added a lot of insight to the tips above. But my favorite tip of his? “Smile and make sure you make the people around you smile… Have people whose company you enjoy, and spend time with them regularly.”
